Soundtracks in Horror-Why Is It Important

Hey guys! Today I'm going to be explaining why soundtracks are important in movies, but first, what is

Soundtrack: Musical accompaniment in a movie that's already pre-recorded.

Why are soundtracks important in Horror Movies?

Firstly, outstanding horror movies rely heavily on a suspenseful soundtrack. For example, if the film "Halloween" didn't have that sinister soundtrack:

the slasher Michael Myers would just be a man in a mask. An effective horror soundtrack heightens the terror in a scene exponentially, maybe even scaring the audience before something visually scares them. Soundtracks in horror really set the tone for the audience and the director, and "The Omen" soundtrack is a good example:

As Damien is the King of the underworld in the film, it's a perfect fit for him. Music has a powerful ability to create a distinctive atmosphere in the film, and they help to direct the audience's emotions throughout the narrative. Another good example of a sinister soundtrack from "It Follows" (2014):

"It follows" soundtrack gives a sense that someone is being "followed", even without a visual representation. Sound also highlights scenes of a film, this feature sound has is especially applied to horror, which is why sound is an important part of horror films.

FUN FACT: A Soundtrack or a short recurring musical phrase is also referred to as a Leitmotif. Producers use Leitmotif as a way to say something, signal, or foreshadow without giving a visual representation, kinda like what the soundtrack "It follows" does.

The types of Leitmotifs are:

  • Character leitmotifs
  • Emotional Leitmotifs
  • Setting Leitmotifs
  • Evolution Leitmotifs
Which I will talk about shortly in my next blog.
