The Lovely Genre Known As: Horror

Horror is a genre that is intended to shock, scare and/or thrill its audience. In different ways, Horror can be interpreted, but there is always a villain, monster, or threat that is often a reflection of the fears society experiences.

Some elements of the horror genre

  • Themes- Horror reflects the culture and what it fears at the time (invasion, folklore, etc.)
  • Character Types- Monster, Killer, or slasher, although sub-genres contain certain hero archetypes
  • Setting- Horror can take place in the past or present, and can have many settings like a gothic castle, haunted house, etc.
  • Music- can be used to build suspense and the atmosphere
The appeal of horror narrative in literature, film, and theatre lies in the pleasures it associates with fear, suspense, and terror; no matter what is being conveyed to the audience.

Here are my top 3 favorite  Horror movies:

1. I really like Poltergeist because it had amazing effects (ex. when the little girl's head spun around seemed so real) and the sound effects gave a lot of suspense, especially the foley sound of someone speaking through the TV. In my opinion, this movie had a great plot, as a young family is visited by spirits in their home that later "kidnapped" their daughter. This movie gave me a good scare, so it takes the number one spot I definitely recommend watching it.

 2. My Bloody Valentine is a very suspenseful Slasher with the plot of a young man named Tom who returns to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of Valentine's night massacre that claimed the lives of 22 people. Tom believes he is innocent, but he really has everything to do with the killing of those 22 people. The iconic gas mask that he wears really gave me a fright.

3. The Conjuring was based on a true story, the story of a family of five daughters moving into a haunted farmhouse. Some supernatural things start to occur during the first few nights, but the family didn't think anything of it until their young daughter gets possessed. Two exorcists later get the demon out of the girl's body. To be honest, this movie had a lot of musical suspense and jumpscares to it, which is why it was so good. It also had great camera movement, as the use of dolly was incorporated into the film.

Not only are ghost stories entertaining, but they can also help children experience courage, learn about different cultures, and expand their sense of community. Sharing ghost stories can even help children grow braver as they face their fears in a safe setting reading a book or listening to a ghost story.
